Fluoride

Fluoride in toothpaste is an active ingredient to prevent tooth decay. It promotes “remineralization,” which supplies minerals to teeth and restores them to a healthy state. It also strengthens the tooth substrate by making it resistant to acids released from dental plaque. These actions help to prevent the development and progression of dental caries. We use sodium fluoride and sodium monofluorophosphate in our toothpaste products.

Some people are concerned about negative health effects of fluoride in toothpaste. However, the safety of fluoride has been investigated by many international organizations and confirmed to be safe. Based on the results of these investigations, the World Health Organization (WHO), the FDI World Dental Federation, and many other organizations around the world recommend the use of fluoride to prevent tooth decay. On the other hand, excessive fluoride intake in early childhood while teeth are forming may cause “dental fluorosis,” which is the formation of white streaks or spots on the teeth. Once permanent teeth have formed, “dental fluorosis” does not occur. Therefore, it is recommended to use appropriate amounts of toothpaste for early childhood because of the risk of developing “dental fluorosis”*1 . Parents and caregivers should supervise children to ensure that they do not swallow the toothpaste when brushing*1 .
