BHT (Butylated Hydroxytoluene)

BHT is used as an antioxidant or stabilizer. It plays an important role in maintaining quality and performance of raw materials and products by preventing their deterioration due to the reaction with oxygen in the air (oxidation). It is used in a wide range of fields, including resins, rubber, textile processing, packaging materials, food additives, cosmetics, detergents, and pharmaceuticals. Since BHT is heat stable, it is useful to prevent oxidation of certain raw materials during manufacturing processes that involve heating. It is also used to protect oils, fats, and active ingredients such as vitamins that are susceptible to oxidation. We use the minimum amount of BHT in our products to ensure that they can be used safely until their expiration.

BHT has been evaluated for safety by regulatory authorities and independent organizations in various countries and regions for its use in pharmaceuticals, foods, and cosmetics, and its safe levels of concentration have been specified. However, in recent years, further research has been ongoing in Europe due to concerns about endocrine disruption. In this context, the Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) of the European Commission conducted a safety review of BHT in cosmetics based on the latest findings and concluded in 2021 that it is safe to use in cosmetics at appropriate concentrations.

Kao complies with the laws and regulations of all countries and regions in which we operate. Additionally, we conduct rigorous safety assessments and perform a wide range of product-use tests based on the Kao Safety Standards* , so that you can use our products safely. Through these measures, we use the minimum amount of BHT in our products. We continuously explore new scientific findings relevant to the ingredients we use and review the safety of our in-market products. We are committed to continuing to develop our products for a better customer experience and increased product safety.
