Aluminum Salts

Aluminum salts are used as an active ingredient in antiperspirants to reduce sweat and the odor that results from sweat being broken down by naturally occurring bacteria in the underarm. Aluminum salts are also used as colorants in various cosmetics, as an active ingredient in toothpastes, and as food additives.

There is a concern about aluminum salts contributing to the development of breast cancer or Alzheimer’s disease. The safety of aluminum salts has been investigated by many authoritative agencies, including the World Health Organization, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the American Cancer Society, and the Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety of the European Commission. Each group has independently stated that the scientific evidence does not support a causal link between aluminum salts used in cosmetics, over-the-counter (OTC) drugs, and food additives, and breast cancer or Alzheimer’s disease.
