For many years, Kao has been working to reduce plastic usage, develop environmentally friendly containers, and encourage the reuse of original containers by offering refill packs. Film-type refill packs were released in 1991, and refillable items now account for over 80 percent of Kao Japan products. This has enabled us to decrease plastic use by about 70% compared with the time when Kao's containers were non-refillable.
Film-type refill packs and containers have allowed us to use less plastic than before. However, to protect the product inside, such packaging is made from multiple layers of different materials. This complicates recycling. To further reduce our environmental impact, we are pursuing the development of recyclable film packaging.
In addition to minimizing plastic use, Kao is also making progress in creating 100% recyclable plastics. This is another step on the journey to our ultimate goal of zero waste.
