Fabric Care
A biofilm is a complex of bacteria and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) containing polysaccharides and proteins that the bacteria secrete (Figure 1).
Figure 1
It is known that biofilms are present on towels and other kinds of fabric, and are related to odors and dullness that washing with antibacterial or disinfectant detergents cannot remove. Biofilms are difficult to remove by ordinary washing, by using a bleaching agent, or by boiling or heating by other means.
Kao has previously developed various technologies for inhibiting or removing biofilms, but found difficulty in removing biofilms that could not be eliminated completely and have subsequently built up and expanded.
Endeavoring to solve this problem, Kao focused on the structure of EPS in biofilms and developed a cleaning technology to remove EPS by combining Bio IOS®, an anionic surfactant developed in house, and a certain other surfactant. This new cleaning system loosens the structure of EPS and allows the surfactants to penetrate into biofilms and thoroughly wash the fabric, removing biofilms much better than before.
You will find this technology for removing biofilms highly effective in removing odors and dullness that washing could not do before. And we will keep contributing to more pleasant living by striving to solve concerns about washing.
