Working jointly with an equipment manufacturer, Kao pioneered the development of a body fat scale for dogs. Taking advantage of the fact that electricity flows through fat less easily than it does through muscle, the device can estimate a dog's body fat ratio by introducing a weak electrical current and measuring the resistance.
This convenient device reliably measures the body fat ratio regardless of the breed or body size of the dog. It not only evaluates whether or not the dog is overweight, but is also expected to provide an accurate picture of how diet and exercise affect obesity. The body fat scale for dogs has been introduced in veterinary hospitals throughout Japan, where it is used to monitor obesity and health in dogs. It also serves as an educational tool for the management of canine diets.
