The Japan Sustainable Palm Oil Conference 2018 (JaSPOC 2018) was held on October 22.
This was the third edition of the conference designed to promote procurement of sustainable palm oil in Japan. Kao has participated as a sponsor company and executive committee member since the first conference in 2016 (held as the RSPO Japan Day 2016).
The conference covered a wide range of topics related to palm oil, including the current situation at small oil palm farmers, supply chain transparency initiatives, the certification scheme, and procurement standards for palm oil in the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The launch of the Japan Sustainable Palm Oil Network (JaSPON) was publicized at the 2018 conference. JaSPON will be officially launched in 2019, after which its major activities will get underway with the goal of contributing to greater procurement of sustainable palm oil in the Japanese market. These activities involve companies sharing information and exchanging opinions, serving as a platform in Japan and becoming an organization that communicates information inside and outside Japan.
In addition, Best Practice awards were presented to four leading companies in sustainable palm oil procurement.
Kao received the Orangutan Award in recognition of its setting of traceability targets back to the palm plantation and measures taken to achieve these targets as well as it's A- rating in the CDP forests program in 2017.
Kao will continue to practice sustainable and responsible palm oil procurement.
