Kao launches Fine Fiber Technology to create a layered, ultra-thin skin care product for the cosmetic industry

Kao Corporation has developed a small, high-performance diffuser which embodies Fine Fiber Technology to create a layered, ultra-thin skin care product for the first time.
Kao will launch this technology in the cosmetic field on December 4, 2019, under the Kao brand est and the Kanebo brand SENSAI, which offer a new night time skin care routine that combines ultra-thin membrane formed by the diffuser with essence.
Based on the its ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) strategy, the Kirei Lifestyle Plan published in April 2019, Kao has committed to offering environmentally and socially friendly products through "Yoki-Monozukuri with ESG integration" to contribute to a better life. (Kao defines Yoki-Monozukuri as a strong commitment by all members to provide products and brands of excellent value for consumer satisfaction.)
Under the ESG-based management strategy, Kao positions Fine Fiber Technology as one of Social innovations to address social problems and will further proceed with its research with a view to apply the technology not only to cosmetics but also to the medical field. Kao's aim is to establish its global presence by applying the technology to various products and customer services in the future.

Commercialization background

Fine Fiber Technology enables the formation of a layered ultra-thin membrane on the surface of the skin by spraying several layers of a thin fiber measuring <1 μm in diameter directly on the skin using a specially designed device. The membrane is light, soft and moves flexibly with the skin while making the surface even and smooth. The membrane becomes thinner toward its edge with a small difference in the level between the membrane and the skin. This allows it to blend naturally with the skin (while not lifting at the edges but not coming off easily). The high capillary action*1 of the ultra-thin membrane also allows for the rapid and even application and retention of cosmetic products in the membrane. At the same time, excess water vapor can escape from the spaces between the interwoven fibers so the membrane can maintain adequate moisture permeability without completely blocking the skin. Kao promoted the development of a device capable of forming this ultra-thin membrane at home and created the small, high-performance diffuser in collaboration with Panasonic Corporation Appliance Co, which has extensive knowledge about cosmetic appliances.
Moreover, Kao expects that this unique ultra-thin membrane can be applied in various fields in combination with various products. Kao has also been conducting studies to maximize use of the characteristics of this membrane. Kao starts to apply this technology to the skin care essence in the cosmetic field.

  • * 1 Capillary action: The ability of a liquid to flow between narrow spaces due to forces of attraction.

The first commercialization in the cosmetic (skin care) field under the brands est and SENSAI

The initial launch will be under the brands of est and SENSAI for use in overnight skin care. Kao plan to offer a new night time skin care routine that combines ultra-thin membrane formed by a small, high-performance diffuser with essence.
In the final step of night time skin care, the user applies the essence onto the face. Then she sets the spray type potion inside the diffuser, and sprays it onto the skin. Once applied, the fiber blends into an ultra-thin, translucent membrane that stays in place overnight like a second skin, which is then peeled away the next morning. The membrane helps to protect against dryness and maintain a moisture-rich environment, replenishing the skin with ample moisture.

Creation of new values in the cosmetic (makeup) field

Following the skin care product, Kao will advance the development of makeup products. Applying Fine Fiber Technology, Kao will possibly offer a base makeup that delivers a natural and beautiful look while firmly covering pores, uneven skin color, and blotches, as well as the body makeup that allows painting the skin at desired sites on the body. The membrane has a high capability to keep makeup on. At the same time, it can enable users to remove the makeup easily whenever they want. Using these characteristics, Kao will continue to create new value in the makeup field.

Future expansion of Fine Fiber Technology application

Based on dermatological knowledge that has been cultivated over many years, Kao is currently conducting studies to apply Fine Fiber Technology in a variety of ways with a focus on the medical field. To expand its use, Kao will screen candidate ultra-thin fibers and concomitantly used formulations and develop new optimum devices for them. In the future, the possible applications include aftercare following procedures such as chemical peels and laser therapy, and care for skin disorders. In addition, Kao will consider to contribute to cover makeup for bruises and scars as well as to appearance care*2 in the future.

  • * 2 Appearance care: Care for appearance changes which is a factor to lower the quality of life.

Kao continues to listen closely to the consumer's voice and further advance research in cooperation with external specialists to establish its global presence.
