Fragrance Creation Technology that Combines Art and Science

To provide attractive fragrances that are appropriate for products people use and situations where they are used, Kao is developing fragrances for products using more than 1,200 kinds of fragrance raw materials (natural and synthetic).

Kao collected data on the concentrations and odor intensity of 314 perfumery raw materials used commonly in the development of fragrances for products in various fields, and built a database of them^*1 . We have also collected data on fragrance, such as the storage stability in different products, their ability to eliminate malodor, and what image people associate with fragrances, into databases and have used these databases in fragrance development.

Fragrances used in products are designed by perfumers. They carefully select approx. 50 kinds of raw materials appropriate for the product and produce a formulation from them based on scientific data. We provide various fragrances, such as a clean scent that you can experience when taking laundry out of the washing machine, a pleasant scent that you can sense during dishwashing, a sweet scent that rises from skin or hair after taking a bath, and a deodorant fragrance for toilet cleaning.

On the other hand, since there is an infinite number of combinations of fragrance raw materials, it is important to combine scientific data and artistic design in ways that emphasize fragrance quality to produce fragrances that people like. We endeavor to raise our sensibility by drawing inspiration from nature, music, pictures, and the like and communicating with evaluators and perfumers in different locations around the world.
