Kao and the City of Science Darmstadt join forces to deliver donations to Ukrainian twin city Uzhhorod

Kao and the City of Science Darmstadt are joining forces to support the city’s Ukrainian partner town Uzhhorod with another donation in kind. In recent weeks, Kao's headquarters shipped 55,000 diapers and 80,000 sanitary napkins to its European head office in Darmstadt. There, the shipment was topped up with more than 15,000 hair care products from Kao’s Guhl and John Frieda brands. Onward transportation by truck to Uzhhorod in Western Ukraine, located 1300 kilometers away from Darmstadt, took place on Thursday, June 30, 2022. The products are handed out to locals starting July 5, 2022.

"We at Kao are deeply saddened by the devastating war in Ukraine. Our sympathy goes out to all the people suffering from the terrible conditions and who are forced to flee," said Guido Kirchhoff, President Functions Operations EMEA at Kao. "We want to deliver aid where it is urgently needed. That's why we are  collaborating with the City of Science Darmstadt to provide the approximately 110,000 inhabitants of Uzhhorod and additional refugees on-site with necessary sanitary products."

Jochen Partsch, Lord Mayor of Darmstadt, added: "With the ongoing donations, we want to show our friends from Uzhhorod that we are always at their side. Given the current situation in Ukraine, there is obviously still a lot to do, and a lot of aid required. It helps when different actors collaborate and contribute to the donations.”

The initiative builds on Kao’s and the City of Science Darmstadt’s joint commitment of recent months and weeks. In March, both parties joined forces to send eleven power generators and eleven pallets of shampoos from Kao brands John Frieda and Guhl to Uzhhorod. Aside from these donations in kind, Kao and its employees have raised over 560,000 Euros that were donated to aid organizations such as the UNHCR and
the International Red Cross.
