Making the world healthier and cleaner is a core commitment in Kao's Kirei Lifestyle Plan. To help drive this ambition, we are working to reduce emissions in our own product manufacturing facilities, and we are also working to meet the increasing consumer need for transparent sustainability claims.

Some of the ways we are reducing energy consumption of our production processes include moving to energy-efficient cleaning processes and heat reduction for mixing product formulas. These efforts are helping to deliver a reduction of carbon emissions for a selection of our salon and consumer product manufacturing.

Addressing Consumer Needs for Transparency

Today’s consumers are demanding more transparency on product sustainability claims.
 
To answer that need GreenCircle Certify have audited and certified that our manufacturing facility in Darmstadt, Germany has achieved a carbon footprint reduction through our energy efficient manufacturing practices for John Frieda and Guhl shampoos and conditioners.

This reduction was achieved by introducing smarter formula designs for John Frieda and Guhl shampoo and conditioners. The revised formulas allow for the mixing process to require less heat during the production process.
 
This resulted in Guhl’s shampoos carbon footprint to be reduced by 83%, and conditioners by 24%. John Frieda’s shampoos carbon footprint has been reduced by 25%, and conditioners by 23%.
