How do we know if skin's barrier function is weak or strong?

If your skin becomes more sensitive and irritable, and you feel stinging sensations, it could be signs that your skin’s barrier function is weakened. We use TEWL (trans-epidermal water loss) as a standard measure to determine the strength of skin’s barrier function.

The value can be calculated by measuring the amount of water loss in our skin. A low TEWL count means that less water is lost through the skin. On the other hand, if a high TEWL count is measured, it means that skin’s barrier function is weakened and large amounts of water are escaping from skin.
