What happens when skin's barrier function is weakened?

Skin problems caused by external irritation such as perspiration or friction tend to occur more easily when skin’s barrier function is weakened. In addition, weakened barrier function is not able to retain moisture in our bodies, and thus skin can easily become dry.
People with sensitive skin that is vulnerable to even the slightest environment change or external elements, have a weakened barrier function.

However, this may not be the case for those who experience allergic reactions. The deterioration of the skin’s barrier function is usually caused by insufficient moisture in skin, as well as external irritation, which will eventually lead to "dry and sensitive skin".
