To contribute to the realization of more sustainable lifestyles, Kao is working with administrative bodies, private corporations, and NPOs in research and information-sharing efforts.
Since 2016, in collaboration with Kawasaki City and the food company Ajinomoto, we have been conducting a hands-on environmental education program for parents and children.
Along with Ajinomoto and E-Square (a CSR and environmental consulting company), Kao launched the Society for Sustainable Food and Lifestyles in 2011 as a way to evaluate consumer awareness and lifestyles, as well as think about creating a more sustainable future. The environment is something that everyone must consider, not just those with a particular interest in environmental issues. Recognizing the importance of working with a wider spectrum of people, Kao is making efforts to collaborate with companies whose business activities are relevant to everyday life, and to widen our horizons with respect to the kind of actions we can take.
In addition to our survey research and program development, we have undertaken various events to communicate with consumers, such as hosting forums at EcoPro, an international exhibition on the environment and energy, and organizing workshops at Ajinomoto, Kao, and Tohoku University.
Since July 2016, the Society for Sustainable Food and Lifestyles has started to join hands with Kawasaki City (Kanagawa Prefecture) to host a program for fifth grade students with their parents and guardians. The name of the hands-on environmental education program was “the Earth’s Future through Food and Living-Summer Challenge”.
Teaching students about eco-conscious efforts at Kao’s Kawasaki Plant (2018)
During the program, children visited Kawasaki City’s environment-related facilities, were shown around Kao and Ajinomoto plants in Kawasaki, and participated in workshops to understand the relationship between everyday living and the environment. We believe that these activities will inspire children to think about how their lifestyles impact the environment, and encourage them to lead more eco-conscious lives. Kao received the Kids Design Award 2017 from Kids Design Association in recognition of the benefits of the “Summer Challenge” program.

We will continue to create events that motivate consumers and the children of the next generation to lead more eco-friendly lifestyles.
