Kao is raising environmental conservation awareness by assisting the establishment of foundations promoting efforts to protect and nurture greenery in communities both inside and outside Japan. We are looking to support these efforts from various angles.
Contact with nature offers peace of mind and enriches a child’s development. Since 2000, Kao has been promoting an original Kao Creating Forests for Everyone program together with the Organization for Landscape and Urban Green Infrastructure.
This multi-year program provides support to citizen groups that are committed to protecting and nurturing the local environment. To date, we have supported a total of 499 organizations, including sustainable forestry initiatives for effective greenery management and environmental activities to create opportunities for children to come in contact with greenery.
Because the results of forest creation activities cannot be seen in a short period of time, we focus on organizations’ long-term goals while providing support over several years. It is our intention that their activities can be continued even after our assistance ends. These efforts were recognized in Japan in 2015 when Kao received the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Award for Contributions Made Towards Promoting Urban Greenery.

Kao has engaged in the FURUSATO Environmental Conservation Project since 2012 in collaboration with the Organization for Industrial, Spiritual and Cultural Advancement (OISCA) to combat the issues of deforestation and soil degradation in Northern Thailand.
Government officials, Thai Kao Group staff members, the local community and neighborhood schoolchildren were in attendance at an afforestation event Kao hosted as the first round of the project. A total of 42,500 trees were planted in nearly 35 hectares of the land through reforestation and forest protection activities over the past five years and they are properly managed with support of the local residents.
Starting from 2019, Kao moves forward with activities including crop production utilizing the reforested land and initiatives to help the local residents improve living standard and technology in the second round of the project. The afforestation activity has also started in another land at the request of the local community.
