Shifting to IT and Eco Sales Cars Usage

Reducing CO2 emissions through IT applications and eco-cars

Kao is promoting the use of IT in logistics and is switching to hybrid cars for its sales activities. From production to distribution and sales, Kao is looking at how it can reduce environmental impact from all angles.

IT applications for smart logistics solutions

Kao is aiming both to increase productivity and decrease environmental impact by integrating the functions of 10 plants and 30 logistics centers in Japan with sales activities.
Distribution is the connection between plants and retail stores. In order to provide customers with the products they need when they need them, we need to think carefully about how to quickly and safely move items from plant to logistics center to retailers, all while having the smallest environmental impact possible.

Checking driving data records after finishing a delivery

The concept "people-friendly, earth-friendly" is a high priority for our truck drivers as they put eco-driving into action to promote safety and minimize environmental impact. By comparing optimum delivery routes with actual driving conditions through driving data, we can review performance and identify points for improvement.

Also, Kao endorses the White Logistics, a campaign led by the Japanese government to promote sustainable logistics, and made a "Declaration of Voluntary Action" in June 2019.
As part of this effort, we are working to reduce waiting times for trucks at our distribution centers.
The truck reservation system was launched in 2019, and implementation at all major distribution centers was completed in 2021.
In the past, trucks were unloaded in order of arrival, resulting in a concentration of truck arrivals at certain times of the day, thereby creating waiting times.
Since the introduction of the reservation system, the carrier is able to reserve an unloading time the day before, thereby reducing waiting time by approximately 80% compared to before.
By reducing the waiting times of trucks, we are able to contribute to the realization of sustainable logistics by improving the working environment for truck drivers and reducing CO2 emissions from idle engines.

Introducing eco-cars as sales vehicles to reduce CO2 emissions

In our sales activities, we are promoting safety and low environmental impact through eco-drive initiatives. In 2012, we introduced the use of hybrid sales cars and eco-tires. As of the end of December 2022, about 50% of the Kao Group's sales cars were hybrids.
Furthermore, we are promoting the use of public transportation within parts of the Greater Tokyo metropolitan area, the Kinki region, and other urban regions. Kao is committed to evaluating the environmental impact of its sales activities from different angles.
