Kao Announces the Forest Stewardship Council Certified Procurement Declaration in Collaboration with Six Japanese Companies

Kao Corporation announced the FSC certified procurement declaration 2020 at the Post 2020 Procurement of Sustainable Forest Resources Press Conference, sponsored by Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Japan, which was held on July 2. This announcement promised that the company would procure FSC certified materials as part of its efforts to procure sustainable forest resources in collaboration with six other Japanese companies.

In accordance with the company's Sustainable Paper and Pulp Procurement Guidelines*1 for Sustainable Procurement of Raw Materials, Kao is committed to changing the paper and pulp used in its consumer products, packaging, and office paper to recycled or sustainably sourced versions by 2020. In March 2016, Kao introduced the use of Japan's first corrugated boxes*2 certified by FSC*3 . By the end of 2017, 80% of the corrugated boxes Kao used globally were changed to FSC certified paper.

The Kao Group will continue to strive for sustainable procurement of raw materials with an objective of contributing to sustainable society.

1. Set specific targets for procuring FSC certified raw materials and products for forest resources such as timber, paper and pulp, cardboard, containers, and packaging paper by 2020.

2. We will become industry leaders so that sustainable forest resource selection of raw materials and products certified by FSC will be the norm from 2020 onwards, aiming to achieve the 2020 target along the way.

3. Inform consumers about the importance of selecting products marked with the FSC logo to achieve SDG number 12 on Responsible Consumption and Production, and number 15 on Life on Land by 2030.
