Kao Selected for Dow Jones Sustainability World Indexes

- Highly Evaluated for Environment and Compliance Approaches -

On September 4, 2008, Kao Corporation (President and CEO: Motoki Ozaki) was selected for inclusion in the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI World), one of the leading global indexes for socially responsible investment (SRI).

DJSI World is a global stock index jointly developed by U.S.-based Dow Jones & Company in conjunction with SAM Group and STOXX Limited in Switzerland. It measures corporate social responsibility (CSR) performance by taking three areas into account: economic, environmental, and social activities. Top companies in each industry sector are then selected for inclusion.

The surveys for the selection are conducted annually. This year, some 2,500 companies worldwide have been nominated and 320 companies from 27 countries were selected, including 36 companies from Japan.

This benchmark has provided a significant criterion for investors who are highly aware of CSR and sustainability of companies.

Kao has been promoting CSR activities that enrich people's lifestyles worldwide through "Yoki-Monozukuri", or "a strong commitment by all members to provide products and brands of excellent value to satisfy consumers". For this year's selection, Kao has been evaluated highly, in particular in terms of its continuous efforts for environment and compliance activities.

Kao aims to work toward creating a sustainable society by further enhancing global environment conservation through its company-wide corporate activities and its various approaches based on dialogue with a wide range of stakeholders.
