Kao Selected as a Health and Productivity Management Brand for the Fourth Consecutive Year

Also Recognized as Certified Health and Productivity Management Organization under the Large Enterprise Category (White 500) for the Second Consecutive Year

Kao Corporation was selected by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE), for the fourth consecutive year, as a "health and productivity management brand" among listed companies in recognition of its outstanding health-conscious management. Kao was also recognized by METI, for the second consecutive year, as a "Certified Health and Productivity Management Organization (White 500)" for its outstanding practice of health-conscious management.

The program for selecting the "health and productivity management brand" was launched in 2015 through joint cooperation between METI and TSE as part of the activities of the Japan Revitalization Strategy. The program recognizes companies that set the management of employee health as a corporate management issue and actively implement relevant strategies.

"Certified Health and Productivity Management Organization (White 500)" was jointly established by METI and the Nippon Kenko Kaigi in 2017 to recognize large organizations, including listed companies, to engage in the health and productivity management program in collaboration with health insurance society members and other associations.

Kao's activities

In 2008, Kao published "the Kao Group Health Declaration" based on the principle that without healthy employees, the Company cannot achieve its objective of Yoki-Monozukuri, which allows the Group to grow and contribute to society. Currently, with the goal of increasing the number of employees with high health literacy, Kao is engaged in "health management," which uses a PDCA cycle to increase employee health levels. To promote employees' health, Kao has been involved in organizational initiatives such as establishing a cooperative framework with participation by the employer, the health insurance union, industrial healthcare staff, and external specialists. The company also tracks health data and performs analyses by office, branch, age bracket, occupation category, etc. to encourage healthy habits in line with area characteristics. These continuous efforts resulted in a 32% decrease in the number of employees on extended leave of absence, and a 20-day reduction in absent days per person, from 2008 to 2014. The company continues to accumulate results and know-how as it upgrades its corporate environment.

Fiscal 2017 marked the commencement of K20, the Kao Group Mid-term Plan aimed for 2020. One of the health management targets of K20 is maintaining the health of employees and their families. The new GENKI Project was launched with this aim. Initiatives to address lifestyle-related diseases, mental health issues, smoking cessation, dealing with cancer, and women's health are deployed in both population-based and individual-based approaches to further deepen health management.

Kao will continue to make efforts to maintain the physical and mental health of employees and to contribute to realizing the enrichment of the lives of people through Yoki-Monozukuri by taking the perspectives of consumers and customers.
